Porta Romana Staff Smash Target to Fully-Fund Second Education Centre Build in 2019
26 Mar 2019
Last year, in celebration of their 30th birthday, luxury furniture and lighting company Porta Romana set their staff an ambitious fundraising target of £30,000 to fully-fund the construction of an SOS Africa Education Centre to support disadvantaged children in South Africa. Before long, the team embarked upon a wide range of diverse fundraising ventures including sponsored half marathons, sky dives, staff parties, auctions and much more.
Thanks to the incredible determination of the Porta Romana team, charities committee, staff and customers, we are delighted to announce that not only has the £30k target been reached; but an additional £5,500 has been raised to fund an outer learning space and landscaping for the new facility.
“We chose to support SOS Africa because we were so impressed by the work that Matt and Claudia do, to make lasting change to the lives of very deprived children and communities in South Africa. We especially admire their ambition to empower children through education. Their approach is direct and personal, very much reflecting the ethos of Porta Romana, so it was a very natural partnership.
After a year of dedicated fundraising we are excited about building our Education Centre, a project that so well represents our love of making and creating. We have worked together as a team to raise the funds for the build, each department at Porta Romana has been involved and embraced the challenge to reach our goal. It will be a huge privilege to join the building team in South Africa and mostly to meet the children and help create a welcoming and nurturing environment for the children to learn in.” [Porta Romana Managing Director, Ali Milam]
Furthermore, this inspirational group will not have to wait long to witness the fruits of their labour as construction work on the “Porta Romana Education Centre” is due to begin this May. The new facility, will be home to SOS Africa’s Elgin Education Programme which launched in January this year at St Michael’s farm school.
Not stopping there, members of the Porta Romana Team will also fly out to assist with decoration and landscaping before the new centre opens its doors to the children of Elgin and Grabouw in late June.
“From the moment we were invited to Porta Romana’s Farnham headquarters to discuss a potential partnership with SOS Africa, we were inspired by the vision and enthusiasm of Ali and her team and the common values shared by both parties.
From start to finish, they have wholeheartedly embraced this challenge. This incredible sum of money raised will help empower St Michael’s School and its children for generations. Their reward will be seeing the smiles on the faces of the children whose lives they have changed, when the centre opens in June. With the designs now finalised, we cannot wait to get started.” [SOS Africa Founder/CEO, Matt Crowcombe]
