Sponsor New Charity Building Projects
Without doubt, one of the most impactful ways to support a charity is to sponsor a new building project. Building projects can range from the construction of a new education centre, classrooms, sanitation blocks, pathways, security features or sports facilities. These projects usually take place either on SOS Africa owned property, serving local disadvantaged communities or on the campus of a partnering school, accessible to its staff and students. SOS Africa is able to design bespoke buildings tailored to the needs of the local educational institution or disadvantaged community.
Recent SOS Africa Building Projects
The growth of SOS Africa’s Western Cape Education Projects has been made possible thanks to generous donations made by businesses, foundations and community groups towards essential building projects. The construction of the charity’s very first education centre situated at Grabouw High School was fully-funded by Dudley Rotary Club in the UK. SOS Africa’s Grabouw Education Centre, based at the heart of the school, provides classrooms, a kitchen, a library, an office and an outdoor learning space.
More recently building projects have been funded at SOS Africa’s Elgin Education Centre (sponsored by Porta Romana), Gordon’s Bay Education Centre (sponsored by Hermitcraft) and Skills and Training Academy, Sir Lowry’s Pass (sponsored by John and Hazel Barnett). Each of these successful building projects has enabled the organisation to establish new partnerships providing invaluable education and training to hundreds of children and young adults. Put simply, without investment in essential infrastructure, these life-changing projects would not be possible.
Sponsor Charity Renovation Projects
Funding charity renovation projects can also make an invaluable contribution towards the overall impact of SOS Africa Education Projects and the services provided by partner schools. The main objective of renovations is to improve functionality and the long-term impact facilities can have upon these programmes. For example, classroom renovations can maximum the potential of learning spaces both in terms of layout and aesthetics. Effective renovations can also improve the safety and compliance of buildings, protecting the well-being of the intended beneficiaries. Building upgrades can also have environmental benefits; retrofitting for example, reduces embodied carbon by reusing existing structures rather than demolishing and rebuilding, cutting waste and resource use. By repurposing existing materials and integrating eco‑friendly products, renovations can also support a circular economy and conserve finite resources.
Recent SOS Africa Renovation Projects
There are many examples of recent impactful SOS Africa renovation projects. In 2024, SOS Africa renovated an old residential property in Gordon’s Bay and converted it into a multi-functional education centre. The changes introduced maximised the functionality of every aspect of the property. SOS Africa’s Gordon’s Bay Education Centre now has classrooms, offices, toilets, a kitchen, workshop and accommodation. These changes have enabled the charity to facilitate holistic education programmes each afternoon.
Ongoing renovations have also transformed a recently purchased conference centre in Sir Lowry’s Pass into a large training academy. The SOS Africa Skills and Training Academy now consists of 4 large classrooms, 3 offices, a conference centre and 7.7 acres of gardens and sports fields. Soon renovations will be carried out on the kitchens and sports facilities enabling the charity to upscale its training programmes.
Sports Facility Building and Renovation Projects
A priority of SOS Africa is not just providing education to disadvantaged communities but also access to sports facilities. Regular participation in sports activities can have a profound impact upon the health and well-being of children and young adults. The many benefits include, enhancing physical health, mental well-being and social skills. However, due to funding restraints, schools are often unable to maintain sports facilities which consequently fall into disrepair.
Thanks to the generosity of the charity’s sponsors, SOS Africa has recently built, renovated and upgraded many local sports facilities. In 2025, after a successful fundraising appeal, the charity restored a 20m swimming pool in Grabouw (see above left). This exciting facility is now accessible to children from schools from across the region for swimming lessons and competitions. Similarly, the charity carried out significant renovations to a swimming pool at its Skills and Training Academy (see above right). Now restored to its former glory, the pool hosts swimming lessons to children from across the Helderberg Basin.
