Over the course of 5 nerve-jangling days in October 2025 and April 2026, a record-breaking 470 fearless fundraisers abseiled from the King Alfred’s Tower in aid of the SOS Africa Children’s Charity and Stourhead National Trust.

It was the greatest participation in any SOS Africa fundraising event since the charity first started hosting abseils from iconic West Country landmarks in 2011. Following its inaugural event at Kilver Court Viaduct in Shepton Mallet, courtesy of Aardvark Endeavours instructors, abseils have been organised from Cranmore Tower, Glastonbury Pyramid Stage, Wells Cathedral and Shepton Mallet Prison. 100% of the funds raised at each event supports local charities and funds the education of disadvantaged children in South Africa.

The King Alfred’s Tower Abseil experience was SOS Africa’s highest challenge to date and offered breath-taking views across 3 counties as participants descended from the 250-year-old folly situated on the beautiful Stourhead Estate. Come rain or shine, their bravery was only matched by the incredible support provided by cheering crowds, across the 5 days.

Among the participants were 10-year-old Eris and 76-year-old Rosemary:

“The organisers were so kind and supportive, especially to my 10-year-old daughter Eris. The cheer she got once down made her day and she is excited to do it again next year. What you do is incredible and my family and I were humbled to be part of it.” Sam Dearsely (Abseiler)

“It was a joy to finally complete the experience and not too bad for a 76-year-old! Great also to know that the £1,000 I raised will go to such a wonderful cause as SOS Africa and help all the children like the sweet little girl I sponsor in Cape Town.” Rosemary Waterkeyn (Abseiler)

And with sponsorship still coming in, the event fundraising total currently stands at an incredible £55,500 thanks to the bravery of our abseilers and the generosity of over 3000 sponsors! These invaluable funds have already renovated school swimming pools, classrooms, sponsored many children and planted trees across the Stourhead Estate.

“Congratulations to all 470 abseilers for completing this formidable challenge! It was a privilege to meet you all on our way up the tower and to witness your bravery and determination to fight your fears. You are an inspiration to us all. Thank you also to Phil and his team from Stourhead National Trust for this wonderful opportunity and to Ian and his instructors for always making sure our abseilers are safe and confident as they overcame their fears.” Matt Crowcombe (Founder/CEO, SOS Africa)
