The SOS Africa Charity begins providing vocational training sponsorship as Andrew completes his first term at Westcliffe School, Cape Town...

It is fair to say that one of the greatest challenges facing young people across the world today is the overwhelming shortage of job opportunities for high school and university graduates. Aside from challenging socio-economic conditions, many argue that this results from poor careers advice on subject choices and the worrying misconception that everyone needs a degree to succeed in life. The latter arguments are vindicated by the fact that, often, there are job vacancies which require filling, but applicants lack the relevant qualifications and work experience to be eligible.

The ultimate goal of the SOS Africa Charity is “empowerment through education” to break the cycle of poverty affecting South Africa’s youth; this can only be achieved by identifying the skills and interests of each child, on a case-by-case basis. Only then can we shape subject and course choices around potential career paths to ensure future employment. We also recognise that these course choices can and should extend beyond the classroom.

After performing well at Grabouw Primary School, SOS Africa’s Andrew showed increasing interest in pursuing a vocational education. After taking careers advice, in January we enrolled him at Westcliffe School in Cape Town. At Westcliffe, every learner receives academic as well as technical training and the focus for Andrew in Term 1 has been welding. Westcliffe Welding Teacher, Heink Slippers, recently praised Andrew for his great attitude and natural abilities. The school has also provided feedback that he is excelling in all areas and they are happy with his progress. We are delighted for Andrew and hope that he will continue to thrive at Westcliffe and fulfil his career ambitions.

The school’s motto “success through training” has been wholeheartedly embraced by the SOS Africa Charity who will encourage students with similar interests and abilities to follow in Andrew’s footsteps in the near future.
