SOS Africa Charity Child Sponsors Linda and Martin reflect on their visit to SOS Africa’s Somerset West Education Centre after seeing our South African education programmes in action…
“We really enjoyed our time at the school, it was lovely to see SOS Africa in action. We were made to feel most welcome, although our sponsored child was shy at first! However, she soon came out of her shell and was happy to chat and show us how her English was coming on – we were very impressed. The children were all very industrious, reading or playing the learning games on the mini Ipads. They did wear us out though when we went outside to play… It was a complete pleasure to spend time with them.
Reflecting on our visit, we have two overriding observations:
- How the children were clearly comfortable and happy in this environment, they all said they very much enjoyed spending time in SOS Africa’s Aftercare Centre.
- The scale of the challenges to provide education and opportunities to the children are huge. These are not restricted to just the teaching, resources and funding, there are also the day-to-day practical challenges, such as just getting them to and from school safely.
Having lived in South Africa for nearly 40 years, we had a good understanding of the need to help provide support to children and so were happy to be given the chance to do something concrete via the efforts of the SOS Africa team. Having spent the afternoon with the children, support staff and Anna, we are re-doubled in our support for the wonderful work you do.
