As we come to the end of Women’s Month, the SOS Africa staff here in South Africa wanted to celebrate this special occasion in a meaningful and impactful way. We organised a unique event where our teenage girls from both centres, along with all our dedicated staff members, came together for a day filled with inspiration, laughter and gratitude.
The highlight of the day was a dynamic motivational session led by the esteemed speaker, Gaynor Diedericks. She engaged the audience with an interactive talk that included games, encouraging our girls to embrace authenticity and resilience. Gaynor emphasised the importance of using one’s unique qualities to inspire others and shared how she uses her love for laughter to uplift those around her, even in challenging times.
“It was very inspiring to be motivated by Gaynor. She taught us to be proud of who we are and to never give up and use our inner strength to our advantage.” Raynick Keyser (Grade 10)
In a touching gesture of appreciation, each of the girls had prepared a special gift for our staff members, expressing their heartfelt thanks for the impact they have had on their lives. It was a beautiful moment of connection and gratitude, highlighting the important role that our staff play in nurturing and supporting these young girls on their journey.
To end the day on a light-hearted note, we organised a fun game that brought everyone together in a spirit of camaraderie. Participants were given the choice to either showcase a trendy dance, sing a song, perform an action like imitating someone, or answer a question about themselves. Laughter filled the room as everyone participated with enthusiasm and joy.
“I loved how we all stepped out of our comfort zones together, laughing and bonding through each activity. It was such a valuable experience bringing us closer together as women.” Meyah Clarke (Grade 10)
The day was not just a celebration but also a time for reflection and empowerment. Our children were reminded of their own strength and resilience, while the positive impact our staff members have on the lives of these young girls was reaffirmed. It was a day of learning, growth and connection that will be remembered fondly by all who participated.
As we wrap up our Women’s Month celebration, we look back on a day filled with inspiration, gratitude and laughter. It was a reminder of the importance of coming together as a community to lift each other up and support one another on our individual journeys. The bond between our staff and aftercare children was strengthened and memories were made that will last a lifetime.
