Battling against inclement weather conditions and their better judgement, last month 120 brave individuals took on our 150ft abseil challenge from the top of Swansea University’s Kilvey Halls of Residence in aid of SOS Africa and Swansea-Siavonga.
United by one common goal; to empower underprivileged children from Zambia and South Africa through education, participants were recruited from university staff, students and the local community. Throughout the two-day event, which formed part of Swansea Uni Discovery Charity’s 50th Anniversary Celebrations, gathering crowds were inspired by the determination of the brave philanthropists.
For the first time in the charity’s history all participants successfully completed the abseil including 2-year-old Andrew and his sister Tamzin who tandem abseiled with their father John:
“All Andrew could say was “again, again” and Tamzin wants to try a forward-facing abseil next time as she has seen me do it.”
And now that all of the sponsorship has been collected, we are delighted to announce that we have hit our £10,000 fundraising event target, surpassing the amount raised at our 120ft Swansea Civic Centre Abseil, 18 months before. The funds raised will pay for over 41 years of school tuition for the children supported by the two African education charities. To reward them for their achievements, many of our abseilers now await a special fundraising prize draw taking place in November, to find out whether they have won two flight tickets to visit our projects in Africa.
