During the September School holidays SOS Africa arranged an exciting trip to the ArtsCape Theatre Centre in Cape Town, where the SOS Africa students watched a thrilling dance performance by JazzArts and were taught some routines by some of the talented performers. SOS Africa sponsored high school student Mildred Msebele describes the day …

Last week we were given the exciting opportunity by SOS Africa to go to the ArtsCape in Cape Town. We were greeted by JazzArts who showcased an amazing performance which inspired many of us to take up dancing. Many of the dancers highlighted how they have always wanted to become professional dancers and never allowed anyone to tell them otherwise; this determination made a big impact on us all.

“Having been a dancer in the past, it was an electrifying thrill to observe our kids partaking in the JazzArt workshop. The sheer joy and excitement on their faces were truly heartwarming. It was a reminder of the boundless opportunities and creativity that dancing can offer.” Li-andi Claassen (Western Cape Ops Manager, SOS Africa)

After their performance, they taught us a little choreography which many of us found challenging. The room was filled with joy and laughter but also sweat and complaints on whether or not a move should be that painful. My sister Primrose stated “Yoh I love their dance, can’t we come every day” – for her it was still an experience of a lifetime.

After our session in the JazzArts studio, we went off to lunch in the ArtsCape cafeteria, after which we were given the opportunity to tour ArtsCape and learn about its history. Many of us were intrigued and fascinated as to how ArtsCape became so famous, producing so many amazing shows throughout its 53-year history. We were also all shocked with how cheap events tickets are; at just R2.50 (15 pence), we all agreed that if we lived in Cape Town, we would go every day!

At the end of the day, we were all exhausted and tired from the fun and fulfilling day we had experienced, all thanks to SOS Africa. We hope to continue having more outings like this. Thank you, ArtsCape and SOS Africa, for giving many of us such a memorable day.
