The SOS Africa staff recently lent their expertise to a round-up of information on how to prevent & combat bullying in schools. The responses for this round-up were collated by the international educational publisher, Twinkl as part of their efforts for the UNESCO Day of Peace and Non-Violence.
Across the world, 30th January is now immortalised as the international School Day of Peace and Non-Violence. Since 1964 it has become a day to commemorate the death of Mahatma Gandhi and remember the principles he chose to live by. Founded by Spanish poet Lorenc Vidal Vidal, it represents: “Universal love, non-violence and peace. Universal love is better than egoism, non-violence is better than violence, and peace is better than war.” Along with some great organisations from Europe, Africa, America & elsewhere, the article discusses the methods teachers and parents can employ to identify signs of violence & bullying while attempting to stop it before it begins.
The organisation responsible for the article is Twinkl. Based out of Sheffield, England, Twinkl was founded in 2010, with a mission to ‘help those who teach’. The company provides high quality, trusted educational materials, which are all teacher-created and checked. This ranges from schemes of work and assessments to augmented reality games and much more. The company has expanded across the globe including establishing a second office in Wollongong, Australia. They have won awards for Best Education Company of the year worldwide in 2017, ‘18 and ‘19.
SOS Africa’s contribution focussed on some methods that the organisation’s diligent team have developed over the past 17 years of operation. While acknowledging there is no one-size fits all solution to the issue, their contribution, along with those of the other organisations involved show how simple techniques can be adapted to any scenario and hopefully lead us towards a future with less violence and bullying.
