SOS Africa's Western Cape staff and children celebrate the beginning of Christmas by hosting a special end of year talent show...

Christmas is a magical time of the year but yours is about to get even more magical when we share this special story with you. At the end of every school year we host a big party for all the children from each of our three education programmes in the Western Cape. This year’s party was bigger and better than ever because the children decided it should be a talent show!

After weeks of practising, the day finally arrived, and all the children sat in the hall in great anticipation of one another’s performances. Li-Andi, our new Club Manager in Somerset West, initiated an icebreaker to get things started. Meyah helped sing beautifully!

Our youngest group, St Michael’s Club from Elgin, started off with a wonderful recital of a poem called “Oliphant and Ou Juffrou Papa”, not to mention great hand actions to go with it! Then a group dance to “A Lion Sleeps Tonight” impressed the crowd. Teacher Abi beamed with pride!

The show ended with performances from each club so that everyone participated even in just a little way. However, it was the Somerset West Club that stole the show with their group Hip Hop dance. Every child participated with heart and soul; their passion and humour were contagious!

At the end of the talent show, a special prize giving took place to commend one outstanding student from each club for their formidable achievements throughout the year…

Special recognition had to be given to our absolute STAR – KIM (from Somerset West Club). Not only has she been an outstanding all-round student, she has also been a brilliant role model to the other children, a constant guardian to each of the other students and the most helpful student to the teachers. Kim has just finished junior school achieving excellent results, carrying out all her duties as school prefect and now progresses to High School with flying colours! We are so proud you Kim, good luck and keep making us proud.

Rae, SOS Africa’s Western Cape Administrator presented the awards and commented that “One of the best moments of the magnificent end of year event was during the prize giving when four children were selected to be recognised for their outstanding personal performances throughout the year. They received generous rewards and to see their friends and peers share this moment with unmitigated joy and absolutely no envy at all was more than heart-warming and very touching. Congratulations to all the SOS children for their wonderful spirit. Let the magic continue next year!”
