Bishop of Bath and Wells to Abseil from Wells Cathedral for SOS Africa

31 Jul 2019

This Autumn the Bishop of Bath and Wells, The Rt Revd Peter Hancock, will abseil from the North West Tower of Wells Cathedral in support of the SOS Africa Children's Charity. He will be joined by the Dean of Wells Cathedral, his staff and currently around 280 brave members of the public. Bishop Peter aims to help raise vital funds for the charity’s reading programmes across South Africa.

The Rt Revd Peter Hancock, the Bishop of Bath and Wells, has just signed up for SOS Africa's 124ft Free Fall Abseil from Wells Cathedral

The 124ft freefall abseil from the North West Tower of the iconic Wells Cathedral in Somerset is SOS Africa's toughest, largest and longest fundraising event to date. Over the past few months the SOS Africa has been inundated with entries from businesses, schools and community groups across the South West.

The charity’s latest supporter, Bishop Peter is looking forward to the challenge: “Wells Cathedral is sometimes referred to as ‘the most poetic of all English Cathedrals’ and there is no doubt that it is a most wonderful and inspiring building which speaks of the presence of God among us. On 27 September I shall be taking part in an abseil down that amazing building in aid of SOS Africa which is committed to help fund the education and care of African children.  It’s a local charity and one which I am pleased to support.” [The Rt Revd Peter Hancock]

We are so grateful to Bishop Peter, The Dean of Wells Cathedral and his staff and the local community for wholeheartedly supporting the event and for the significant impact their efforts will make to the lives of the SOS Africa children.” [Dr Matt Crowcombe, CEO/Founder SOS Africa]
