SOS Africa Charity to Support 90 Children by 2018

01 Feb 2017

The start of a new year is always an exciting occasion for everyone involved in the SOS Africa Charity. It represents a time when our staff and children, reunited and re-energised after the long summer break, are joined by the new and slightly anxious faces of children whose lives are about to change significantly for the better. Meanwhile, throughout the UK and across the world, sponsors new and old expectantly await updates from their first days at school. It is a wonderful process, and this year we experience it for the 15th time, as our ambitious plans to expand our scope of support across South Africa continue to be realised…

SOS Africa has sponsored the education and care of children in Mafikeng since 2003  SOS Africa charity children now attend Curro Academy School in Mafikeng

For SOS Africa’s Kelebogile and Olebogeng, this will be their final experience of this occasion as they enter their concluding year at Mafikeng High School. We all wish them well as they prepare for their Matric Exams; shining examples to the 17 children who are part of our Mafikeng Education Programme. January 2017 also represents the dawn of a new partnership between SOS Africa and Curro Academy, an exciting new school with passionate teachers and fantastic facilities. The immediate beneficiaries of this new affiliation, Ofentse, Angelinah and Lele, you can see proudly (and coolly) sporting their new uniforms in the image above.

Meanwhile, a thousand miles to the south, our 19 children attending Grabouw Primary School were given little time to reacquaint as they headed straight into fiercely competitive school and regional athletics competitions. Among the memorable performances, Melray, Raynick and Asandele led the way in the 100m and 80m sprints and newly crowned champion Elvino broke the school shotput record. Our children also enjoyed their first swimming lessons of the year.

And finally, just over the mountain, SOS Africa has launched a brand-new Education Centre and Remedial Programme at Somerset West Methodist School. In the mornings, the new facility will accommodate the charity’s latest initiative, a remedial programme to help support up to 36 children with learning difficulties, each year. Then, after the final school bell of the day has rung, the centre transforms into an Aftercare Centre, attended by the 12 children who are part of the charity’s new holistic education programme at the Methodist School.

So, after 14 years, what started out as a family project which supported one child in 2003, now provides a brighter future for 90 children in the care of 13 wonderful staff across 3 different regions. We would like to thank Jenny, Anna, Deseree, Tenille, their staff in South Africa and our sponsors and fundraisers across the world for supporting us along the way.
