SOS Africa's Cranmore Tower Zip Wire Challenge

From the 'Zipping Zebras' and the 'Mendip Meerkats' to the 'Barratt Baboons' and the 'Bam Bootie Warriors,' for the first time ever, across two action-packed weekends in September, 300 brave individuals from the Mendips and beyond successfully zip wired from the historic Cranmore Tower to raise invaluable funds for Shepton Mallet’s own SOS Africa Charity and other local causes. The participants ranged from the ages of 8 to 80 and formed African themed teams from businesses, charities, schools and groups of friends from across the region!

After the successes of last year’s Cranmore Tower Abseil during which 160 individuals raised an incredible £12,000, the SOS Africa Charity, founded 10 years ago to help fund the education of underprivileged African children, was asked to create an even tougher challenge for the summer of 2013. With the help of Bruce and Frankie from CheddarClimbingCaving, and a loyal band of volunteers, we set up a thrilling 100m Zip Wire from the same venue through the canopy of its beautiful forest.

This year SOS Africa also decided to invite other charities to bring teams to fundraise at the event; by introducing a 50/50 scheme whereby the funds these teams raised would be split equally between SOS Africa and these worthy causes, smaller organisations also had the opportunity of generating some much needed funding. Frome resident Sarah Hillman for example, brought a 15 strong team to raise funds for her Kenyan charity, Mama Upendo Children’s Trust.

Event organiser Matt Crowcombe is delighted with the successes of the charity’s latest venture: “When we were asked to develop a fundraiser even more exciting than the Cranmore Tower abseil we were concerned that the Zip Wire might be too daunting for some. However, we clearly underestimated the bravery and incredible support of the local community! Thanks to their efforts it is looking like we will smash our initial £12,000 target. This will mean we can support the education of more children in January 2014 whilst helping out some other fantastic causes. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved!”
