Smaller charities join forces to further global awareness and promotion of charity work across Africa

In today’s World, it is often difficult for smaller grass-roots charitable organisations with limited marketing budgets and resources not to be overshadowed by larger multi-national charities who often invest considerable amounts of funding into public relations. Despite this dearth of ‘surplus funding’ it does not make these smaller charities any less deserving of support; many philanthropists often prefer to support smaller charities to ensure their contribution has a maximum impact.
This has definitely always been one of the greatest challenges faced by SOS Africa, particularly because of the charity’s pledge to invest all funds raised and donated into the futures of the children we support. As a consequence, we have always relied upon the tireless work of our volunteers, the loyalty of the local communities and the generosity of our sponsors.
However, whilst recruiting for our fundraising events this year, we decided to take a slightly different approach which would benefit not only our charity, but also other smaller organisations from the local community. This approach would allow other non-profits similar to SOS Africa to recruit for and participate in our fundraising events, whilst raising equal sums of money for both causes.
‘Roland’s Sierra Leone Charity,’ was set up by a teacher from Wells Cathedral School in Somerset to empower the unprivileged people of Sierra Leone through music. The charity enables groups of students from Wells Cathedral to provide top quality music tuition and play a series of concerts for young and old alike as well as teach in local primary schools. When we first met Michael Meally, Manager of the Sierra Leone project, he told us that the greatest challenge for him was to organise exciting fundraising projects to enable his students to raise funds, in the absence of large marketing/events budgets. As a possible solution, we invited Michael’s team to participate in our Cranmore Tower Abseil Event and divide the funds raised equally between the two causes.
This experiment proved to be a resounding success; Wells Cathedral brought 4 abseil teams to the event comprising of adults and students and raised an incredible £1775; £887.50 for each cause. As a consequence SOS Africa can fund the tuition of 4 more children and Wells Cathedral have more funding to invest in their next Sierra Leone concerts and all without spending a penny on marketing!
When asked about this new approach Michael Meally said: "This exciting new link between SOS and our school charity is a great example of local organisations working together to further global awareness and promotion of charity work across Africa itself. Matt and I hope that this is the beginning of a fruitful relationship and we are already planning our next joint venture."
SOS Africa believes that this approach can open up similar opportunities for other smaller charities from the local community in the near future; whilst allowing them to continue their grass-roots approaches. We would like to invite them all to our future fundraising events in 2013.
