Bay Area SOS Africa Society, California - an example to us all!
15 Aug 2011
When the SOS Africa charity was first founded over a bowl of jelly and ice cream back in 2003, we would never have dreamed that we could attract the vast array of support that we now receive from across the globe. We were particularly thrilled when we were contacted by a young group of high school students from California, who were interested in founding a society to raise funds to support the education and care of two of the charity’s youngest children. Not long after, the ‘Bay Area SOS Africa Society’ was founded.
Since that day, the many members of the society have worked hard to support these two children, by carrying out various fundraising initiatives and events. Their most recent event took the form of a garage sale. This involved the collecting of second-hand items from each of the society’s members and selling them to the residents of the Bay Area. Not only did this prove to be a great way to raise funds for the charity, but it also helped raise awareness of our cause throughout the local community. After two day of selling, the event raised $333.75. In total the society has now raised £759 for the two children they are supporting.
After the event, the organiser Ryan Habibi commented: “We had a lot of fun working together to make the event successful, talking to all the people who came by, and working with all the customers to make the most amount of profit possible.”
Over the coming months, the society members are also planning to organise a marathon walk and a charity dinner to raise further funds. SOS Africa thanks this group of selfless teenagers, who work hard for the benefit of children less privileged than themselves; they truly are an example to us all.
