Cranmore Tower Abseilers Smash Charity Fundraising Record

26 Nov 2012

After a memorable event and months of fundraising and sponsorship collection, we are delighted to announce that our Cranmore Tower Abseil Fundraiser has raised an incredible £13,000 for the SOS Africa Charity (see team fundraising page). Not only has this smashed our initial £7,500 fundraising target, but it also represents the most money ever raised at a fundraising event hosted by the charity, overtaking the £11,600 raised at last year’s Cardiff Half Marathon.

After the final abseiler safely touched down at the base of the historic tower, in an overwhelming show of support from the local community an incredible 160 fundraisers from 24 different teams, recruited from schools, Rotary and WI Groups, fire stations, quarries, accountants, cub scout groups and many local businesses completed the challenge.

We would like to congratulate the event’s top fundraisers, Team ‘Safari So Good’ from Shepton Mallet’s Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs who collected an amazing £1,388.43! Special thanks go to Marcus Wyburn-Mason for recruiting and organising the team. We would also like to congratulate Jane Hall’s ‘Cheesy Cheetahs’ the winners of our ‘best dressed’ award for their fantastic cheetah costumes.

The funds raised will be invested in the development of SOS Africa’s Aftercare Centre, a project which will be the charity's main focus from the outset of 2013. The Aftercare Programme plays a vital role in the educational development of the SOS Africa Children. Once established, the new centre could also serve the community in other ways, such as through the provision of adult education.

After the successes of our Cranmore Tower Abseil, we have already begun planning our fundraising events for 2013, which might well include a terrifying 150m zip-wire challenge at the same venue! More information about this and other future SOS Africa events will be posted on the SOS Africa Events Page in the New Year…

Many thanks to everyone involved, from all 160 abseilers to Farhad, the owner of Cranmore Tower, Bruce and Frankie from Cheddar Climbing Caving and the SOS Africa volunteers. We welcome you all back to our future events in 2013.
