How can we describe the SOS Africa Cranmore Tower Abseil event? Perhaps, above all, it could be defined as a truly community effort as the support from everyone was phenomenal. The charity abseil down Cranmore’s 148 feet Tower touched the hearts and challenged the adrenalin junkies of the local community. Following the abseil down the Kilver Court Viaduct in 2011, it was feared that this new challenge may have been a step too far. After all, who would want to abseil the height of ten giraffes?  As it goes the answer was – 160 brave hearts. The event appealed to a huge age range; an eighty year old lady with a heart bypass and an eleven year boy, Louis who single-handedly raised £320, numbered amongst the coolest participants.

Throughout the two day event, the woods were packed with eager abseilers and enthusiastic supporters. Teams of six had grown to teams of ten and everyone brought along a bunch of friends.  The atmosphere was electric and the SOS Africa team were overwhelmed by the generosity and eagerness of all who attended. Encouraged by the guarantee that every penny raised would be invested in the education of the South African township children, even dog walkers paused to chat and contribute.

Some 'Cheesy Cheetahs'  Fireman from Frome and Wells Fire Station also entered teams

The participants are too numerous to mention but they included schools, the Rotary and WI Groups, fire fighters, local quarrymen, accountants, members of the local community, and many local businesses. It not only proved to be an exciting challenge but it also very much promoted team building. We were also blessed by some amazing weather; families picnicked whilst cheering on their nearest and dearest.

The good news is – we are set to smash our £7,500 target which will speed the development of the charity’s latest project. When the children finish school at lunchtime they are taken to an Aftercare Centre for lunch, to complete their homework, to write to their sponsors and to play together.  The present one is now too small and we are now making the plans to build our very own SOS Africa Education Centre.

Matt Crowcombe, founder of the charity said: “The two day event was surely the charity’s most successful fundraising event to date! We would like thank the leaders of each of the 24 participating teams, SOS Africa’s loyal volunteers, Bruce and Frankie from CheddarClimbingCaving and Farhad for letting us use this fantastic venue.”

And what next? Plans are already underway for an even bigger and better event next year, so watch this space! Finally a very big thank you to everyone involved from all of the SOS Africa Children.
