NEW Toiletry Bags that are good for us AND our environment
18 Aug 2021
We are so pleased to announce that our children now have a wonderful new addition to their sponsored package and care that SOS Africa offers; TOILETRY BAGS. Putting these together was great fun because we challenged ourselves to fit into budget AND find products that were natural and plastic free. Guess what? We did it and it wasn’t hard or expensive.
When we presented them to the children we asked the older kids to do some pretty simple maths with pretty big numbers. Needless to say, we were all pretty horrified by how many plastic toothbrushes would be thrown into waste/landfill in just our lifetime!
Thank goodness EARTHLY came to the rescue with these awesome bamboo toothbrushes engraved with the wild animals. All the children we so impressed and we’ve made plans to add our discarded toothbrushes to compost or make something with them! Nearly every child remarked how soft these brushes are too.
Now you can’t have toothbrushes without their best friend, toothpaste! These numbers are just as staggering in waste/landfill so we were again rescued by the very clever and earth conscious company EARTHLY. They have manufactured the incredible ‘toothy bits’; a little toothpaste tablet you bite, chew and brush your teeth with. All the froth, all the peppermint breathe as a regular toothpaste BUT WITHOUT THE PLASTIC TUBE!
Finally our toiletries needed a bag! We did not want to buy plastic tubs so we got creative and Eddie’s skills helped us create some very special bags for the children. Eddie used very basic calico and then every scrap bit of blue, red and pink shweshwe fabric that he had leftover from his business. Also inspired by Cheeky Wipes (not available in SA) Eddie made us our own reusable wipes.
SO, we think it goes without saying that, thanks to some very talented people (Eddie and team Earthly) who really care about their environment, we can now brush our teeth and wash our faces without causing ANY PLASTIC WASTE. Thank you Eddie, thank you Earthly and especially thank you to our sponsors to funded these toiletry packs!
